Check out this article by Cn. Andrea Oetman that reflects on the many obvious—and hidden—ways God is shaping us toward love in our everyday lives. From shared worship to quiet moments of gratitude, this piece invites us to notice where love is growing in and around us. A thoughtful, grounding read for wherever you find yourself today.
What is formation?
This is a fascinating question, and I wonder if the question of what is NOT formation may be easier to answer. In a nutshell, formation is the work God is doing in each of our bodies and households and communities in drawing us closer to love. Love is the visible reality of the very heart of God.
Sometimes formation occurs or is sought out in more obvious ways. We worship together, we pray together, we spend time together, we serve together. These are all ways that we experience formation – putting ourselves in places and situations in which we become more loving, more aware of needs around us, more aware of God’s voice and presence.
And sometimes formation occurs or is sought out in less obvious ways. Choosing a patient response despite running late. Sharing a meal with someone. Attending a community organizing event to become more informed and engaged in local needs. Noticing the beauty of a frost-covered windshield. Choosing to begin/end the day with gratitude or prayer. Saying the courageous truth out loud. Being curious.
Sometimes we have the bandwidth to practice intentional formation in big ways. And sometimes we trust that God is doing good work in us as we simply survive and maybe encourage others in surviving hard times.
My own understanding of formation has grown large over time. Each of us is being formed continuously, in a million different ways. It can be challenging to notice and name the formation occurring. Practicing reflection and contemplation can be so helpful:
- Where / when are we becoming more loving to others? What does that look and feel like?
- Where / when are we experiencing love? What does that look and feel like?
- When are we noticing the presence of God? What does that look and feel like?
I wonder what is being formed in and through you these days. I’d love to hear what you’re noticing – feel free to reach out and let me know!
Grateful to follow in the way of Love with you,
Cn. Andrea Oetman
