Our History

St. Michael’s Church was founded in 1885 and we have worshiped in our present building since 1888. The church and the city of Yakima have gone through many changes in almost 140 years and St. Michael’s continues to live deeper into being a faithful witness of the love of Christ in this community.

In December of 2016 St. Michael’s became a specialized mission of the diocese of Spokane, a new incarnation of our many years of ministry in downtown Yakima.

In 2023 we entered into a formal partnership with St. Matthew’s in Prosser and Holy Trinity in Sunnyside to share pastoral leadership and be engaged in ministry together throughout the Yakima Valley.

Our Ministry

We work with many partner organizations to provide a range of services. We are engaged in many community efforts, and together we form a expansive, diverse community of faithful people sharing this space. Our pantry provides food to hundreds of households each week. St. Michael’s Food Pantry is open Friday’s from 10-12.  For more information visit St. Michael’s Food Pantry – Between the Ridges. Many support groups use the building. A meal is served each Sunday afternoon. A shower trailer provides hygiene services to those struggling with homelessness, legal clinics and individual assistance are provided to people seeking citizenship. Just a few examples of the tremendous work that goes on here every day.
